    Critical Public Facility mission evolves as Puerto Rico recovery efforts continue

    In the days following Hurricane Maria’s landfall on the island of Puerto Rico, the Federal Emergency Management Agency assigned the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the mission to evaluate critical public facilities, but since then the mission has evolved from evaluation to construction.

    More than 3,000 pressure-treated utility poles, along with hundreds of concrete and steel poles, arrive at the lay-down yard in Ponce, Puerto Rico, part of the tons of critical electrical components flowing in daily from throughout the nation to rebuild the island’s electrical distribution system.     Corps on track to deliver Puerto Rican citizens life-sustaining power

    In an effort to help Puerto Rican citizens recover from devastation in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Task Force Power Restoration continues its mission to restore the island’s electrical power grid Dec. 24.

    Army Corps now collecting Right of Entry forms for Blue Roofs in Puerto Rico

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is now collecting Right of Entry forms for homeowners wishing to apply for temporary roofing. The Right of Entry centers are now open Humacao and Yabucoa.

    Department of Planning and Natural Resources Office Manager for Business and Administration Services talks to a home owner, helping Operation Blue Roof team members as they walk house-to-house. With five team members on the island, the Temporary Roofing Planning and Response Team is currently going house-to-house gathering Right of Entry forms. The forms allow Corps personnel on private property to assess homes and Corps contractors authority to repair the roofs. More Temporary Roofing team members are on their way. Operation Blue Roof’s purpose is to provide homeowners in disaster areas with fiber-reinforced plastic sheeting to cover their damaged roofs until arrangements can be made for permanent repairs.

    First Blue Roof Being Installed in the Virgin Islands

    The first residential temporary roof made of blue plastic sheeting was installed today on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The program, available to qualified homeowners and known as Operation Blue Roof, can make some damaged structures habitable again until more permanent repairs can be made.
