The Florida Everglades

"None of the implementing agencies can accomplish restoration by acting alone," said Brig. Gen. C. David Turner, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Atlantic Division Commanding General, at the Everglades Coalition Conference Jan. 6 in Fort Myers, Fla. "The Corps will continue to work alongside our cost share partner, the South Florida Water Management District, to maximize federal and state resources to deliver on-the-ground benefits."

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is replacing more than two dozen water control structures, commonly known as “culverts” to reduce risk of failure of the 143-mile earthen dike that surrounds Lake Okeechobee in south Florida.
Backfilling operations are being conducted as part of the Kissimmee River Restoration project. When completed, the project will restore more than 44 miles of the historic Kissimmee River, restore more than 40 square miles floodplain, and slow the flow of water into Lake Okeechobee.
Rehabilitation efforts continue on the Herbert Hoover Dike. The Corps continues work on 32 federal water control structures, also known as culverts, scattered around Lake Okeechobee that are seen as posing the greatest threat to the dike.
The 2015 Report to Congress for the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) was jointly submitted to Congress last month by the secretaries of the Army and the Interior. The report details the collaborative effort of participating agencies and their combined commitment to restore America’s Everglades.
In June 2013, Jacksonville District’s “River of Interests: Water Management in South Florida and the Everglades, 1948-2010” became the first U.S. Army Corps of Engineers publication to be placed on the American Library Association’s (ALA) 2012 Notable Documents list.
